Interfacing FM Systems with Implantable Hearing Devices
نویسنده
چکیده
Cochlear implant recipients can reduce the challenges they encounter in noisy environments through the use of a remote microphone. Although there are numerous options for delivering the signal from the frequency modulated (FM) transmitter worn by the speaker to the FM receiver coupled to the implant, several have now been verified through research as viable, beneficial arrangements. Recommendations for the settings on the implant include mixing ratio and settings on the FM receivers (i.e., FM advantage). Because coupling of the FM system with the implant cannot be tested with traditional electroacoustic methods, behavioral verification using speech recognition in noise with the implant alone and with the implant plus the FM system is necessary. A variety of resources are available for the audiologist to consult for the specific components, start sequence of switches, and verification protocols. Resources can be found through manufacturer and professional association Web sites.

The idea of providing hearing to profoundly deaf patients by artificially stimulating the sensory system has progressed from a futuristic possibility to reality. Generally, an implantable hearing device is designed to capture sound and present it to the auditory system, where at least part of the device is surgically implanted in the child receiving it. The goal of the implantable devices in yo...
متن کامل1 Implantable Bioelectronics – Editorial Introduction
The integration of electronic elements with biological systems, resulting in novel devices with unusual functionalities, attracts significant research efforts owing to fundamental scientific interest and the possible practical applications of such devices. The commonly used buzzword ‘‘bioelectronics’’ highlights the functional integration of two different areas of science and engineering – biol...

Implantable medical devices (IMDs) have evolved greatly since the first pacemaker was designed in the 1950s. The current generation of IMDs are capable of replacing damaged or malfunctioning organs, and are designed for long-term patient care. Cochlear implants, which differ greatly from hearing aids, convert received audio signals to electrical impulses and are capable of bypassing damaged par...

Setting up FM systems in the UK has traditionally been the role of the Teacher of the Deaf (ToD) or Educational Audiologist. Most FM systems are purchased by Education services and are considered to be an “educational aid”, an essential piece of equipment to facilitate the inclusion of hearing impaired children into mainstream education. Personal hearing aids are provided by the National Health...
